For this pattern, I'm using the same pattern as for my Vintage Crochet Flower - but minus the picots... and plus a few more rounds so as to create a flowery octagon:

This pattern is written using USA terminology. I've written the UK equivalents you'll need at the start of each round :)
Round 1
(dc = UK tr)
Ch 5, ss into 5th ch from hook to form a ring, ch 5, 1 dc into ring.
(ch 2, 1 dc into ring) 6 times, ch 2, ss into 3rd of 5 ch to join.
~~~~~
Round 2
(trc = UK dtr)
Ss into 1st 2 ch space. Ch 4, 3 trc into same space.
(ch 2, 4 trc into next space) 7 times, ch 2, ss into top of 4 ch to join.
32 sts (including the 4 ch at the start) and eight 2 ch spaces.
To join a new color: tie off first color. Join new color into same 3rd of 5 ch where you finished. Draw the yarn through the chain, then continue with Round 3, slip stitching into the space below.
~~~~~
Round 3
(trc = UK dtr)
Ss into space between 4 ch and 1st trc, ch 4, 1 trc into same space.
2 trc into each of next 2 spaces between the trc stitches. We now have 6 stitches (including the 4 ch) sitting on top of the 3 spaces formed by the 4 trc in the round below.
(Ch 2, skip 2 ch space, 2 trc into each of the next three spaces between trc stitches) 7 times.
Ch 2, ss into top of 4 ch to join.
We now have 48 trc stitches including the 4 ch - and 8 spaces of 2 ch.
~~~~~
Round 4
(trc = UK dtr, trc5tog = UK dtr5tog)
Ss into space between 4 ch and 1st trc, ch 4.
trc5tog into the next 4 spaces between the trc of the previous round, working as follows:
1 stitch next space - remember we're crocheting all these 5 stitches together! - 2 stitches into next space, 1 stitch into next, 1 stitch next - 6 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through all loops.
Ch 6, ss into 2 ch space.
*Ch 6, trc6tog into the spaces between the next set of trc working thus:
1 stitch into 1st space between 1st 2 trc, 1 stitch next space, 2 stitches next space, 1 stitch next space, 1 stitch next space - 7 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through all loops.
Ch 6, ss into 2 ch space.*
Repeat from * to * 6 times.
Ch 6, skip 4 chain at start of round, ss into top of 1st trc.
To change color: tie off and weave end to the back through the same stitch you slip stitched into. Join next color into the 3rd chain of the next 6 chain loop, ch 1. Then continue with Round 5.
~~~~~
Round 5
(sc = UK dc)
If you didn't change color, ss across to 3rd chain of next 6 chain loop and ch 1.
Now let's continue our round together!
Sc into 6 ch space just below your ss (or where you joined with a new color.)
*Ch 4, sc into next 6 chain space, ch 6, sc into next 6 chain space*
Repeat from * to * 7 times, omitting the last sc after your final 6 ch and finishing with a ss into the 1st sc at the start of the round to join.
~~~~~
Round 6
(dc = UK tr, trc = UK dtr)
Ss into 1st 4 chain space.
Ch 3, 5 dc into same space.
9 trc into next 6 chain space.
(6 dc into next space, 9 trc into next space) 7 times around.
Join with a ss into top of ch 3.
We now have 120 stitches including the ch 3: 8 groups of 6 dc/9trc.
Round 7
(sc = UK dc, dc = UK tr)
Ch 1, sc into same stitch (the top of your ch 3.)
*Ch 4, skip next 4 stitches, sc into next stitch (which is into the last dc of your 6 dc below.)
Ch 4, skip next 4 stitches, 3 dc next stitch (which is the center of your 9 trc below.)
Ch 4, skip next 4 stitches, sc next stitch (which is the first dc of the next 6 dc below)*
Repeat from * to * 7 times, omitting the last sc and finishing with a ss into your 1st sc.
Round 8
(sc = UK dc, dc = UK tr)
Ss into 1st ch 4 space. (Stitch mark here if you like - we will finish the round in this stitch.)
Ch 4, ss, ch 4, ss into same space.
6 sc next space; into 3 dc in center, work 1 sc into 1st dc, 3 dc into next dc, 1 sc into next dc; 6 sc into next space.
*(Ss, ch 4, ss, ch 4, ss) into next space.
6 sc into next space; 1 sc into 1st dc, 3 dc into 2nd dc, 1 sc into 3rd dc.
6 sc into next space*
Repeat from * to * 6 times. Join with a ss into your 1st ss.
And here's another piece I've just made up - in thread, again, but with a different color combo:
