The Loop Petal Flower makes for an interesting crochet project, as you pick up loops from your chain then pull them together to make your petals:

The flower above is crocheted in sports-weight cotton with a 3 mm hook and measures 2"/5 cm across. Compare this weight and look with thread and aran yarns below:

More details and pix below!
Round 1: ch 2, 6 sc (UK dc) into 2nd ch from hook, ss into 1st st to join - 6 sts worked.
Round 2: ch 1, 3 sc (UK dc) into each st around, ss into 1st st to join - 18 sts worked.
Round 3: *ch 19, insert hook under top loop only of 3rd ch from hook, yarn over, pull through loop (2 loops on hook.)
(skip next ch, insert hook under top loop of next ch, yarn over, pull through loop) 8 times.
You should now have 10 loops on your hook.

Ss into same st on circle as where you began, ss into next 3 sts on circle*
Repeat from * to * 5 times, making your final ss into the joining ss from round 2.

Tie off, weave in ends, and pat yourself on the back! I have been quite fascinated by the technique of picking up loops from chains like this and will certainly be investigating the matter further :)
