Lacy Crochet Doily Pattern

This crochet doily pattern makes a pretty placemat! It's an extension of my Lacy Crochet Coaster pattern, so they both go together beautifully!

Circular pink lacy crochet doilyThis doily is worked in sports weight yarn and a 3 mm hook. Measures 10"/25 cm across.

I've also crocheted the doily using different colors of thread:

Thread weight placemat in different colorsIn thread-weight yarn and a 1.75 mm hook, the doily measures 6½"/17 cm wide.

Doily Pattern

The first 5 rounds of the Lacy Crochet Doily are exactly the same as those of the Lacy Crochet Coaster pattern, but I've written everything out on this page so that you have the complete doily pattern here.

For those of us using UK terminology:

sc = UK dc

dc = UK tr

trc = UK dtr

Start with a magic ring. (See my tutorial here if the magic ring is new to you.)

Round 1: ch 4 (does not count as a stitch); 18 trc into ring; close ring gently; do not join into the 4 ch but ss into 1st trc worked. (18 sts worked.)

Tighten ring.

Round 2: ch 1, sc into same stitch.

(Ch 3, sc into next stitch) 17 times; ch 3, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Round 3: ss into 1st 3 ch loop; ch 1, sc into same loop.

(Ch 3, sc into next loop) 17 times; ch 3, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Round 4: ss into 1st 3 ch loop; ch 1, sc into same loop.

(Ch 4, sc into next loop) 17 times; ch 4, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Round 5: ss into each of next two chain of 1st loop; 1 sc into same loop.

(Ch 4, sc into next loop) 17 times; ch 4, ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops worked.)

Round 6: ss into 1st loop; ch 1, 5 sc into same loop.

(5 sc into next loop) 17 times; ss into 1st sc to join. (18 groups of 5 stitches.)

Round 7: ch 1, sc into same stitch.

(Ch 4, skip next 3 stitches, sc into each of next 2 stitches) 17 times.

Ch 4, skip next 3 stitches, sc into next stitch; ss into 1st sc to join. (18 loops each separated by 2 stitches.)

Round 8: ss into 1st loop; ch 3 (counts as 1 dc); 5 dc into same loop.

6 dc into each of next 17 loops around; ss into top of 3 ch to join. (18 groups of 6 stitches.)

In Round 9 we work into the spaces between the groups of 6 dc - see pics below!

The first space is just below your hook. So:

Round 9: ss into space below hook.

Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc); 2 dc into same space.

(Ch 4, skip next group of 6 stitches, 3 dc into next space) 17 times; ch 4, ss into top of 3 ch to join.

(18 loops separated by groups of 3 stitches.)

Here's the start of Round 9 for you in pics:

ss join after last roundRound 9: 1. You've joined with a ss.
ss going into space just below2. Now ss into space below hook.
Stitches worked into space3. Ch 3, work 2 stitches into same space.
Chains worked then stitches into the next space4. Ch 4, 3 stitches into next space.

Round 10: ch 1; sc into same stitch; ch3; skip next stitch, sc into next stitch.

Now we have a nice 3 ch loop on top of our 3 dc.

(sc, ch 3, sc) into next 4 ch loop.

Another 3 ch loop now sits on top of the loop from the last round!

To continue:

(sc into next dc, ch 3, skip next stitch, sc into next dc; (sc, ch 3, sc) into next loop) 17 times; ss into 1st sc to join.

(36 loops made of 3 ch.)

Round 11: ss into 1st loop; ch 1, sc into same loop.

(Ch 4, sc into next 3 ch loop) 35 times; ch 4, ss into 1st sc to join. (36 loops.)

Round 12: ss into 1st loop; ch 1, 5 sc into same loop.

5 sc into each of next 35 loops; ss into 1st sc to join. (36 groups of 5 stitches.)

Round 13: Ch 1, sc into same stitch.

(Ch 3, skip next 3 stitches, sc into each of next 2 stitches) 35 times.

Ch 3, skip next 3 stitches, 1 sc into last stitch; join with a ss into 1st sc. (36 loops separated by 2 stitches.)

Round 14: ss into 1st loop; ch 3 (counts as 1 dc); 4 dc into same loop.

(5 dc into next loop) 35 times; join with a ss into top of 3 ch. (36 groups of 5 stitches.)

Round 15: as we did in Round 9, ss into space below hook.

Ch 3, 1 dc into same space.

(Ch 3, skip next group of 5 stitches, 2 dc into next space) 35 times.

Ch 3, ss into top of 3 ch to join. (36 3 ch loops separated by 2 stitches.)

Round 16: ss into next dc, ss into each of next 2 ch, sc into the 3 ch space just below your hook.

(ch 6, sc into next loop) 35 times; ch 6, ss into 1st sc to join. (36 loops.)

Round 17: ss into 1st loop; ch 1, 8 sc into same loop.

(8 sc into next loop) 35 times; join with a ss into 1st sc.

Tie off, pull the yarn gently to tighten, then weave this tail end to the back through the same stitch you joined into. Then tighten your magic ring again if necessary and weave in your starting end securely.

Here's how I wove in the working end:

Needle going under top two loops of same stitch to weave in end1: Thread yarn front to back under top 2 loops of stitch you joined into.
Pull yarn gently then weave into the back2: Pull gently to tighten, then weave around the edge under the stitches of your last row.
